Selected instrumental movements from Pierre Boulez's Le Marteau sans Maître are presented alongside works of Japanese traditional and Indonesian contemporary music. Boulez acknowledges the influence of non-Western music on his instrumental writing in Marteau, drawing a connection between the Japanese koto and guitar; shakuhachi and alto flute; and Indonesian gamelan and vibraphone. Argento elucidates this relationship with the help of guest performers Masayo Ishigure on koto (Japanese zither) and Elizabeth Brown on shakuhachi (Japanese end-blown flute). Indonesia is represented by leading contemporary composer Tony Prabowo in a duet for viola and alto saxophone with guest performer Chris Mannigan.
